with everywhere being closed for during the COVID-19 global pandemic, a lot of stuff in the world of art and content creators has moved online. this includes exhibitions. usually, we would organise a big space, print work and mount them on the wall, however, the pandemic has taken this away from us this year, meaning we needed to find a new place to showcase our work. what was the next best thing for us? Artsteps? this is where we have moved to present our work this year. for the interim exhibition, I have created my own online show (a link will be at the bottom of this blog post) and it was very different to the physical display I am used to.
there are both pros and cons to using Artsteps for our exhibitions, first of all, it is a lot quicker, easier and safer during a pandemic; there is also a higher chance of people visiting as it is easily accessible from the phone rather than travelling to a location. However, personally, I don't think using Artsteps is as exciting as a physical show, people can't see your work in person, the experience doesn't feel as real. also, the site was very slow and frustrating to use and organise my show, I would have much rather spent more time organising a real show than one online.
It is also a good opportunity for new people to find your work, as it is listed online, anyone can view your work online, anywhere in the world, this means people won't have to travel to see your show which means a wider audience.
To conclude my review of Artsteps, I would say that it is a good site to use during the pandemic and/ or alongside a real exhibition for those who can't attend, but I wouldn't use this to promote my work on its own, I think that it would work great with the physical show for a permanent look at a project also as an exhibition is usually a limited time show.
