for the past six years, I would always use Adobe Photoshop to edit my photographs so I can get them to their greatest quality, and even after six years, I learn new things all the time. my most recent shoot for my Folklore project, I didn't have enough wallpaper to fill the entire backdrop, I had to research how to fix this issue in editing. after watching a video called "How to Remove Wrinkles From Your Backdrop" on Youtube by LKP Studio, this helped gain an understanding on how to edit the background of the image; the background being so important as it is something that can distract a viewers gaze and if the background doesn't look right, the whole image doesn't.
I started off by taking the photograph that I wanted to edit and putting it into Adobe Photoshop, I duplicated the layer and used the Lasso Tool and selected around the model (me) and all of the props (table, bookcase...) everything but the background that I wanted. I then selected edit from the top menu and fill.
Once the fill had loaded, you will notice the entire of the photograph is just the background, I used the spot healing tool to clean up some odd patches, and the Patch Tool to fix the paternities and shading in the background. once this step had been complete, I went back onto the original layer and duplicated it once again.
On this new layer, I used the Lasso Tool once again and selected the part of the background that wasn't covered by the patterned wallpaper. once all selected, I deleted it, this showed the background layer through the back. using the erase tool on the second duplicate layer, I erased some of the image so that background would bleed through, I mainly used this around my subject and I couldn't use the Lasso Tool perfectly previously.
This gave a continuous patterned style in the background of my photograph and looked quite natural. The video that I watched to help me gain this skill and helped me figure out the background of my photographs is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIw8D4CDESA
Here is the before and after of the final photograph outcome:
